It is 1982. The phone rings and you answer it. You never think twice about its safety. It’s the innovative “touch tone” telephone that over the last twenty years has outpaced the older rotary dial telephone. At the other end is someone talking to you; it’s the miracle of communication.
A few years pass and the “pager” becomes the fashion. It is now the 1990’s and over 60 million people throughout the world use “pagers.” Within an instance of time they become obsolete as the cell phone becomes popular and the smart phone emerges taking over how we communicate. By 2017 over 216 million iPhones are sold throughout the world. The Android and other phones take an even larger market share and now within the US alone we see over 300million cellular phone users being exposed endlessly to high levels of EMFs rarely experienced before this age of communication. Most users can’t imagine a life without their cellphone, talking, texting, posting pictures and sharing comments, looking up a fact, a direction, keeping details, their shopping lists, their bank accounts, shopping online, paying their bills, reading books, seeing films, and much more. Everyday you can find users bent over, staring at their screen, precariously walking as they stare hard at their phone’s screen, or sitting at a table with a friend, each silently looking at their screens rather than each other. Be it daytime or nighttime, checking their screens, addicted to a dopamine loop deep within their cognition as described by a study at Harvard University (Science in the News, 2018, Trevor Haynes). Cellphone wireless communication is based on microwaves, which are invisible and rarely felt unless they are amped up to the cooking range. These microwaves are called electromagnetic fields (EMFs). For years they have been used and studied. The waves are also used for radar. Because of their long time use in radar we know a lot about their effects on health. A highly regarded expert in the field of microwaves is Barrie Tower who gave a 26 page testimony in a civil action against the Portland Public Schools use of Wi-Fi. He became involved in this area after he found out that the power densities and frequencies used for Wi-Fi in schools were similar to those used as weapons during the Cold War. His testimony covers documentation from government records. For example, in 1971 “the US Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) referenced 2300 research articles listing in excess of 120 impairments and illnesses attributed to radiofrequency and microwave radiation.” Another study was done by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in 1975 which warned all of its personnel of the risk from low level microwaves including illnesses ranging from microwave sickness (flu like symptoms, depression, suicidal tendencies) to cancer and leukemia. His conclusion was to suggest using a cable or fiber optics for internet use. He was aware that “WI-FI is backed and financed by the most powerful industry on the planet…an industry that apparently does not have to prove its product is safe. Incredibly, the public is rather told to prove it is not!” Our exposure is at levels never before imagined and they are causing a multitude of health problems. Electric Sensitivity (ES), has become a recognized illness throughout the world that now in 2019 finds 6 billion people using cell phones. The only time it is denied is when it affects the interests of the wireless communications industry whose profits must be enormous. Imagine 6 billion multiplied by monthly charges over a years time- several trillion dollars! |
